Dylan Schubert, a senior All-American at Furman and a two-time Southern Conference cross country champion and four-time NCAA Division 1 Championships qualifier, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Nov. 18 at the Panorama Farms Course in Earlysville, Va. Schubert won the Division 1 Southeast Regional title Nov. 10 at the Milliken Research Complex in Spartanburg, S.C., with teammate Carson Williams finishing 13th, as both Furman competitors advanced to race in Virginia, along with the women's team. He reflects on being affected the early part of the season with mononucleosis, in addition to a calf injury, and how that impacted his training and performance Sept. 29 at the Joe Piane Invitational at the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. Schubert examines his comeback and the improvement Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, and how encouraging it was to provide optimism for the postseason. He expresses gratitude for the patience and support of the Furman coaching staff and athletic trainers, and the confidence gained from repeating as conference champion Oct. 27 in Greensboro, N.C., followed by capturing the regional crown. Schubert revisits his 11th-place finish at last year's Division 1 final at the Greiner Family Course in Stillwater, Okla., and the benefit of competing against several top NCAA contenders this year at Nuttycombe, in addition to the Southeast Regional. He shares how beneficial it has been to race against Parker Wolfe and Alex Phillip from North Carolina, in addition to last year's regional champion Nick Scudder of Charlotte and Luke Tewalt from Wake Forest in a deep Southeast lineup, and how Schubert has learned how to be as efficient and mature as possible when taking on the challenge of competing in a pair of 10-kilometer races in an eight-day span. Schubert also speaks about the opportunity to compete at Panorama Farms and how important it will be to navigate the sharp turns and rolling hills on the course. He also shares his ambition to improve and challenge for the individual title, and the belief Schubert has in being able to close strong during the final kilometer.
